Helpful Tips For Moving In Winter

Moving during the winter can provide some additional challenges. However, by taking the correct precautions, you can make it a simple process.

Preparing in advance is the best strategy when moving, regardless of the season.

Throughout this article, we highlight some great tips you can use to make moving during winter as easy as possible.

Check Weather and Plan Ahead

One of the best things you can do is to keep an eye on the weather. Check at least one week before the move, so you know what to expect come the big day. You should also coordinate with your movers and discuss the implication of weather hindrances and rescheduling policies.

Winter Supplies

Be sure to have winter supplies on hand like a shovel, salt, sand, or anything else that will make the winter move easier. The last thing you want is to have your car stuck mid-move.

Set Up Utilities

Before your move, call the company that supplies your utilities and set them up so they are turned off in your old home and turned on in your new home the day of your move. Not having heat and lights on during the winter will be a brutal experience, so it is best to get this dealt with immediately.

Remove Snow from Areas that Will Have Foot Traffic

Visit the house prior to the moving day and be sure there is no snow or other safety hazard that will get in the way. Be sure to get all snow out of the way, cover ice with salt and make a clear pathway from where the moving truck will be to the front door. You should also do the same process at your old home before moving day.

Protect Your Belongings

For breakable items like glass, be sure to wrap them up in blankets as temperature changes and can crack or break if the temperature shifts too quickly. You should also take extra precautions with electronics as the cold can cause condensation, which may cause damage.

Give Yourself More Time to Travel

Because driving in the winter can be more challenging, and you will be hauling a lot more than you typically would, give yourself some more time to travel so you get to your new home safely and don’t break any of your belongings.

Cover Your Floors

With snow comes mess. All of the water and dirt that accumulated on your boots will make its way into your home. To prevent the spreading of a sludgy mess, place mats on your floor at the entrance of your old and new home and any other area you may frequently be walking. You can use old sheets, cardboard, tarps, or anything else that can take a beating.

Follow these tips to have a safe and stress-free move during the winter months!
