5 Ideas To Upgrade Your Home During An Empty Nest Transition

The long goodbyes are over. Tears were shed. A new chapter in the life of your beloved child has begun.

After 18 years, give or take, they have launched. Flown out of the nest. Gone out on their own and are off to college or university.

You obviously prioritized their well-being for all those years, and you are justifiably proud of all they have accomplished so far, and you look forward to seeing where they will end up next.

Also, you’ve been eyeing that room of theirs. Dreaming of what you can do with the space now that the nest is empty!

And, so you should! You worked hard to provide for them. You deserve to treat yourself and get back to doing things that you love.

It’s also a smart investment in your space to update and renovate the space, and the moving out of a child can be the perfect time to do just that.

The question is what to do with the space. We’re here to help. Here are five ideas to upgrade your space now that you are living in an empty nest.

Make it a walk-in closet

It may seem like overkill to turn a full bedroom into a closet, but it can be surprisingly practical. That’s especially the case with older homes.

By designing a beautiful walk-in closet, you will not only add value to the home, but you will likely find value in your wardrobe that had been buried in small, cramped closets. As a bonus, you can design the space so that it could still be used as a spare room when junior comes back for Thanksgiving.

Work from home life

The world changed in 2020 when COVID-19 forced us all into lockdowns. Thankfully, that’s over now, but for many of us, the way that we work has changed forever.

We’re living that Work From Home Life now!

Bent over at a laptop at the kitchen table. Unless you have shares in a chiropractic clinic, that’s not good. You need a proper space that will allow you to set up an office. That will give you the chance to work in a more comfortable environment, and also give you a space that is defined as being for work. To keep that work-life balance in check.

Pump it up!

Speaking of defined, a lot of people got into the habit of working out at home during the shutdowns. Again, where are you doing that?

Find your spin bike and old weights, proper space. That will make it easier to maintain a workout routine, and less likely to use that bike as a clothes hanger!

Get creative

It’s also important to work out your mind, and you can do that with a creative space that is dedicated to whatever it is that gets you going.

Have you wanted to get back into painting? Here’s your chance. Readers would enjoy a library. Maybe having a space to knit will get you to pick up the needles again!

Whatever the passion, here’s your chance to make it happen.

Play: Not just for kids

When we are parents, we can be sometimes guilty of forgetting how to have fun. That’s a mistake. Play is for all ages and when you have a place to play games you’ll be more likely to do so.

Shuffleboard, darts, pool, poker, video games, you name it. Now you have the space. Use it.

And, who knows, it might even get your kid to come back to visit more often too if they can join you for some good games room fun.
