Making the move go smoothly for our furry friends

MoveBuddy’s guide to stress-free moving with pets

Moving to a new home is a significant event in anyone's life. It’s always going to cause some stress and disruption. However, when pets are involved, it adds another layer of complexity.

Pets are sensitive to changes in their environment and routines, so it's crucial to plan and prepare carefully to ensure a smooth transition for them.

To help you have a smoother move with your furry friends, here are five essential things to consider when moving with pets:

1. Plan ahead: Moving can be stressful for pets, so it's essential to start planning well in advance. Research pet-friendly accommodations if you're moving long-distance, and make sure to book them early. If you're traveling by car, plan out rest stops along the way where your pet can stretch their legs and relieve themselves. Additionally, gather all necessary documents, such as vaccination records and health certificates, especially if you're moving across state or international borders.

2. Maintain routine: Pets thrive on routine, so try to maintain their usual schedule as much as possible during the moving process. Stick to regular feeding times, walks, and play sessions to provide them with a sense of stability amidst the chaos of moving. If possible, set up a designated area in your new home with familiar toys, bedding, and food dishes to help ease their transition.

3. Keep them safe and secure: On moving day, it's essential to keep your pets safe and secure. Consider confining them to a quiet room away from the hustle and bustle of movers and boxes. Make sure they have access to food, water, and a comfortable place to rest. If your pet is prone to anxiety or escape attempts, consider using a secure crate or carrier to transport them safely to your new home.

4. Update identification and microchips: Before moving, make sure your pet's identification tags and microchip information are up to date with your new address and contact information. This is crucial in case your pet gets lost during the move or in the chaos of settling into a new environment. Additionally, consider getting a temporary tag with your new address and phone number to attach to your pet's collar during the transition period.

5. Ease them into the new environment: Once you've arrived at your new home, take time to introduce your pet to their new surroundings gradually. Start by confining them to one or two rooms initially, gradually expanding their access as they become more comfortable. Show them where their food, water, and litter box are located, and spend plenty of quality time with them to reassure them of your presence and love.

Moving with pets requires careful planning and consideration, but with the right preparation, you can ensure a smooth transition for your furry companions. By planning ahead, maintaining a routine, keeping them safe and secure, updating identification, and easing them into their new environment, you can help alleviate stress and anxiety for both you and your pets during the moving process.
