5 tips for avoiding injury when moving your house by yourself

There are plenty of reasons why you might decide to do all or part of your next move on your own.

You might feel that hiring professional movers would be too expensive, or that the distance you are moving is not sufficient enough to warrant hiring pros. Although MoveBuddy can help you find professionals who will meet your needs, we aren’t here to talk you out of the decision. Each move is unique and sometimes a self-move is the way to go.

However, we do want to make sure that you are safe when moving.

Moving house is a physically challenging endeavor. Without taking the right precautions possible to injure yourself while undertaking the move.

It’s possible, but not inevitable. To ensure that your move is as smooth and pain-free as possible, here are 5 essential tips to help you avoid injuries when relocating your home.

1. Plan and prepare

Proper planning is the cornerstone of a safe moving process. Before you start, it's important to assess the items you will be moving. Identify which items are particularly heavy or awkward to handle, and consider how you will move them. Create a clear pathway in and out of both your old and new homes to avoid tripping hazards. By organizing your move and decluttering unnecessary items, you can reduce the number of things you need to transport, minimizing the risk of injury.

2. Use proper lifting techniques

Lifting incorrectly is one of the most common causes of injury during a move. To lift safely, always bend at the knees and lift with your legs, not your back. Keep your back straight and avoid twisting or bending your torso while carrying heavy objects. If something feels too heavy, don’t try to lift it alone — always get help or use a dolly.

3. Dress appropriately

The right attire can make a significant difference in your safety during the move. Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing that won’t snag on doors or furniture. Sturdy shoes with non-slip soles are essential; they provide the grip and support needed to safely handle heavy lifting and moving. Avoid open-toed shoes or sandals, as they offer little protection against dropped items.

4. Use the right equipment

Investing in the right tools can greatly enhance your safety. A utility dolly, lifting straps, and furniture sliders can help move heavy or bulky items more safely and efficiently. Using cardboard or plastic to protect sharp edges can prevent cuts and scratches. Don’t forget to use high-quality packing materials to secure your belongings and prevent items from falling and causing injury.

5. Stay hydrated and take breaks

Moving is physically demanding, and it’s easy to underestimate the toll it can take on your body. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you are moving in hot weather. Take regular breaks to rest and recharge. Overexerting yourself can lead to fatigue, which increases the risk of accidents and injuries.

By following these tips, you can reduce the risk of injury during your moving process. Remember that safety should always come first. If a task seems too risky, it’s worth taking the time to find a safer alternative or asking for professional help. Again, that’s where MoveBuddy can help.
