Find Your Inner 'Type A' Self And Have A Perfect Move

Even the most low-key, live-and-let-live personalities among us have it deep within them.
Something somewhere can trigger them to get off the couch, brush off the crumbs from their t-shirt and get on with it!

If this describes you, that’s ok. The world needs Type B personalities, otherwise, we’d never leave work. And, that’s no good.
Just, not when you are planning a move. Nope! That’s the time to look deep within you, and find that Type A side living inside you.

Just like in baseball, there’s no crying in moving. Well, if you plan for it, that is.
We have compiled some helpful tips to help you get off that couch and get your move on.

Never too early

I know you have probably teased your Christmas Crazy Aunt Barb, who started her shopping for Christmas on the previous Boxing Day. Dec 23 has always worked out for you!
Has it? Are you sure your partner appreciated that pack of beef jerky you gifted them last year?

When it comes to moving, channel some Aunt Barb.

From the moment you know you are moving or even planning to move, start your preparations. Have a look at all of your belongings and decide what is coming with you, and what you can start packing. The idea of tackling your entire home may feel like a lot but, if you start early you can slowly poke away at it so that when the big day comes, it won’t be so overwhelming.

And, while you’re at it, buy them something nice to make up for the beef jerky.

Homework is cool

No, really, it is. This isn’t like that grade 12 English Assignment where you just watched the YouTube summary of the plot the night before. You can’t fake it, when it comes to moving.

So, start by looking into each service you may need. Those might include movers, real estate agents, contractors, decorators, and more. Once you have determined that, start shopping around. Get multiple quotes from each service provider so you can get a good idea of what general prices are.

People that fail to do that run the risk of getting the wrong service for your needs, or worse, ripped off.

What’s cooler than homework? Organizing it!

You should create a physical binder that has all of the documents related to your move. Those might include moving checkliststs, moving receipts, utility company info, floor plans, design ideas, contractor bids, medical records, school records, financial documents, moving company documents, and more.

In a digital age, it may seem redundant to have paper copies of these things, but you may not have an instant internet connection or cell in your new location, and carrying around a big binder is less inconvenient than having to run to the local coffee shop (and buying a small coffee) to get WiFi access.

They got to move it, move it

I know you’ve been hitting the gym and that you could lift that 250lbs couch all by yourself if you needed to, but…o, but…

Don’t.

Just don’t. Hire a pro. Professional moving services may cost a bit more upfront, but they are going to save you time and breakage. And in physical therapy appointments when you injure yourself dragging said couch up three flights of stairs.

Pro movers know what they are doing. Use MoveBuddy to hook you up with the one that is best for you.

Details, details, details

This is where you’ll need to tap into that Type A side. There are a ton of details that you’ll need to remember. A lot of these are going to be hard to keep track of - which is one of the ways that MoveBuddy can help.

A shortlist of these includes; contacting your utility providers and scheduling service at your new address after you have decided on your new home and when you will be moving. You’re going to have trouble doing anything without heat, power, and water. So start there.

Next, make sure the internet is ready to go. In 2022, not much gets done without the Internet, after all.

Then look into changing your addresses at your doctors, dentists, etc. If it’s an out-of-region move, you may need to start the process of finding new service providers. If you have kids, you’ll need to get them sorted in a new school and activities.

There’s lots to do. Len on a buddy for help – your MoveBuddy!

For once, we need in the box thinking

There are lots of supplies you’ll need to properly move.

Talk to your movers first before buying anything, but you may need to purchase certain things like boxes, tape, labels, etc.

Buy the supplies new. Your grandmother’s China place settings are more valuable than the $1.50 you’ll save by putting them in a banana box that breaks as you’re walking to the door.

One box for you and one box for you and…that’s enough actually

Although the professional movers should take 99% of what is getting moved, there will be a few items that you’ll want to keep with you. They might be necessary documents, like life insurance policies, passports, or other legal documents, or a comfort item like a favorite stuffed toy for the little one.

So, allow each family member to pack a small box that can fit into the trunk of the vehicle you’ll be travelling in.

That way, you’ll have a little bit of home with you, even when you are in that brief period between homes!
