What You Should Do For An Empty Nest Renovation: Part 2

Part 2 of our empty Nest renovation series

The day is almost here!

After 18 or so years, the countdown is on. The suitcases are packed and the final goodbyes are taking place. That’s right, in just a few days it will be time for your offspring to start their launch into the world as college or university students.

In some ways, it’s sad. It’s been a good run. Lots of great memories have been made. You’ll miss them. It will be nice to see them on Thanksgiving and Christmas vacation.

On the other hand, you’re getting your space back. As much as you’ve enjoyed living in a storage locker for discarded hockey equipment, half-read textbooks, and single dirty socks on the living room couch, it will be nice to get your home back.

So, while your kids are dreaming of what to do with their newfound freedom, you can allow yourself to start thinking of what to do with your empty nest.

What do empty nesters do with extra bedrooms?

The list of things you can do with extra bedrooms you gain from an empty nest is only limited by your imagination. However, there are a few common choices:

  • Make a home office
  • Create a gaming room
  • Add a home gym
  • Build your dream home theatre
  • Convert to a rental or Airbnb space

We outlined some of these in more detail in part 1 of our empty nest renovation series. You can read that article here.

Is it the right time to do an empty nest renovation?

You might be struggling with whether renovating your children’s room is a good idea. Your parental instincts run strong and you might think that you are failing them by taking their space away from them.

That’s understandable, but you also deserve nice things. You’ve worked hard at raising your children and now is the time to let yourself do things for yourself.

You can always convert the space back into a bedroom, if your adult children need to temporarily move back home.

Why should I do an empty nest renovation?

There are plenty of benefits to doing an empty nest renovation. Those include:

  • Treating yourself
  • Increasing the value of your home
  • Breathing new life into an older home
  • Creating a revenue source
  • Taking care of your health
